Joachim Frederick Behnke

Joachim (Joe) Behnke, 83, of Boca Raton Florida passed away on Saturday May 11, 2024 at Vitas Hospice in Delray Beach Florida. He was born in Holyoke Massachusetts on February 11, 1941 to the late John M. and Ellen (Butzke) Behnke. He spent his early childhood growing up in Germany until the allied bombing during World War II. The family returned back home to the United States where he joined the US Army as a young man.

As a long time resident of New Jersey he joined the Hillside Fire Department in 1974 and had a successful career and quickly climbed the ranks of Captain, Battalion Chief, Deputy Chief, and lastly Chief of the department. He loved both the fire service and also his brother firefighters. And in 2004 he retired and made his way to live his life in Florida.

Joe is survived by Donna Brown, his long time partner of 18 years. In addition he is survived by his son Frederick (Rick) Behnke and his wife Gina of Boonton, NJ, son Marc Behnke and his wife Joann of Cedar Knolls, NJ. He is also pre-deceased by his brothers Hans Behnke and Werner Behnke.

Lovingly known as our Poppa Bear he will be missed dearly.
