Robert Mannix, a passionate architect, devoted Gators football fan, lover of island life, and cherished friend, passed away. He had terminal cancer. Born with a love for creativity, adventure, and community, Robert leaves behind a legacy that blends his professional achievements with his deep appreciation for life's simple joys.
Robert’s journey began at St. John’s College High School in Washington DC, where his sharp intellect and caring nature blossomed. He went on to study at the University of Florida, where he earned his Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch). His time at the university was a defining period of his life, and he remained a proud member of the Gators football family throughout his life. His loyalty to his alma mater and its football team was unwavering, and cheering for the Gators was one of his greatest passions.
A highlight of Robert’s professional life was his dedicated work for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), where he contributed to major infrastructure projects that shaped the state's development. His architectural expertise, combined with his attention to detail, left a lasting impact on the roads, bridges, and public spaces that Floridians use every day. Specifically, his work on the 7-mile bridge in the Florida Keys was very important to him. He took immense pride in knowing his work helped improve the state’s transportation systems, enhancing the lives of countless people.
Beyond his career, Robert found joy in many pursuits that spoke to his free spirit and love for adventure. He cherished his time living on the island of Key West, a place that captured his heart with its laid-back charm and beautiful waters. There, he enjoyed the serenity of island life, immersing himself in two of his favorite pastimes: fishing and diving. Robert's connection to the ocean was profound, and the clear waters of the Florida Keys were his sanctuary.
Music was another great love in Robert’s life, especially the songs of Jimmy Buffett and The Eagles. He spent countless hours listening to their music and attending live concerts, where the energy of the crowd and the melodies of his favorite artists filled him with joy. These experiences were some of his happiest memories, and his love for music was a constant source of comfort and celebration.
Robert’s home was made even brighter by the companionship of his two beloved cats, Luna and Paco. Both cats were rescued from Broward County Humane Society. Their playful presence brought him immense happiness, and they were his constant companions through life’s many adventures.
Robert, who will always be remembered for his warm heart, adventurous spirit, and quiet wisdom. His friends and family will never forget the way he balanced his love for architecture with his passion for life, whether it was in the thrill of a Gators game, the peaceful waters of Key West, or the soothing notes of a Jimmy Buffett tune.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the University of Florida’s College of Design, Construction and Planning, or to a local animal rescue in honor of his deep love for Luna and Paco.
Rest in peace, Robert. Your legacy is carried on through the spaces you designed, the music you cherished, the waters you explored, and the love you shared with all who knew you.
